Brynnie’s Playhouse

We wanted to get a playground swingset for Brynnie but really wanted a white one. The problem is that the white ones are twice as much!

Instead, we purchased a regular wooden playset and enlisted the family to help customize it!

Products we used:

We purchased Behr Premium Solid Color Waterproofing Stain and Sealer in color white for the main color. This is available at Home Depot. We purchased a 5-gallon bucket but only ended up using about 2 ½ to 3 gallons of the white.

We purchased the same Behr product for the gray accent color in Cape Cod Gray.  If we did it again, would probably have chosen a darker shade of gray for better contrast. The Cape Cod Gray is very light. We purchased 1 gallon of the accent color.

We purchased spray paint for the plastic items.

Primer: Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch 2x Ultracover Primer in Flat White (approximately 6-8 cans)

Pink: Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch 2x Ultracover Paint + Primer in Candy Pink Gloss (approximately 6-8 cans)

We also purchased 4 large plastic drop cloths (approx 15 ft x 25 ft). Get at least 3mil thick or it will rip easily. Honestly, we could have used more.

Steps and recommendations:

We cleared the painting area (we used the garage due to the high humidity and unpredictable weather here) and laid out the drop cloths. We also lined one wall with plastic so we could lean the larger panels against the wall in between coats of stain.

After, we removed all the wood from the packaging and laid the pieces out. Some of the wood pieces had plastic already attached to them, so we removed the plastic from the wood. The set we purchased was stained already but not sealed so we did not sand anything before staining.

Painting the wood pieces:

We used a paint sprayer thinking it would achieve a more uniform finish and better coverage but, in retrospect, it ended up making more of a mess.  The overspray onto the plastic dried and then came up attached to the underside of the wood.  I recommend just using a brush and being careful not to drip too much.

The playset we bought had all of the wood pieces labeled on the ends with a number. We left the ends with the numbers UNPAINTED so that we didn’t have to guess when it came time for assembly. We touched up those ends after assembly.

We painted one side of all the wood pieces, let it dry overnight, flipped everything and painted the opposite side on the next day. In all, two coats per side (4 days).

Painting the plastic pieces:

We did not sand the plastic pieces either. That might have been a mistake. I would recommend sanding the plastic pieces with a fine grit sand paper to ensure proper adhesion of the spray paint.  We sprayed each piece with white primer first (and put it on way too thick).  Only later did we learn that spray paint instructions recommended spraying lightly, waiting to completely dry, and adding additional light layers and letting each dry until completely covered. We were impatient amateurs.

After the white primer, we painted the slide and pieces we wanted pink over the primer. Again, we put it on too thick.  Who knew painters had to have so much patience? We ended up ruining the acrobat rings and gave up on the swing seats after the paint globbed up and they got stuck to the plastic (rookie mistake). We bought new swing seats from amazon.

After assembling according to manufacturers instructions, we touched up the paint and added the new pink swings.

We used the wood from the pallet the playset was shipped on to construct three window boxes the same width as the windows and stained them to match.

The final touch was some artificial flowers, greenery filler, and floral foam blocks in the window boxes.
