I think the most popular question I get asked about is my hair. Like alllllll kinds of questions about color, types of products I use, my extensions, etc. So I sat down with my hair dresser (who is also one of my best friends now) and answered any of your questions about all things hair related. Before I start, I just want you guys to know that NONE of this is sponsored at all. These are truly the products I use daily that I love.
All Things Hair Q & A
– Who does your hair?
The queen, Jensen Wessendorff. She is located in Sawyer Heights in Houston, TX.
– How do you get so white-blonde? What do I tell my stylist to get your color?
Unfortunately, I cannot give out the formula she uses because it’s client specific and what she specializes in. She spent a ton of time and money getting educated to master this type of blonde, so she doesn’t share this information.
– How do you keep your blonde such an icy blonde without it getting brassy or turning yellowish?
I use purple shampoo once every couple of weeks, which helps a TON. But if I’m feeling my hair is super brassy, I will go in to get a toning treatment.
– Do you get highlights or balayage?
Highlights
– How often do you cut your hair?
I used to only cut it once every couple of months, but now I get it trimmed every time I get it colored.
– What is my natural hair color?
Dirty blonde/level 8
– How does your root line not show up bad?
I ask her to smudge my root every time I get highlights, which basically means she’s giving me a little bit of a root so that when my hair grows out, it doesn’t look bad.
– What kind do you have?
Habit Hand Tied (or Natural Beaded Rows)
– Are they damaging?
Any type of extensions you put in are damaging. Except for clip-ins. These are probably the least damaging professional extensions because there is no heat or glue as opposed to bonded or tape-in’s.
– How much do they cost?
There are many factors that go into determining the price of your extensions, and this will completely depend on the hair dresser you go to. For example, how long you want your hair, how many rows you need, how thick your natural hair is, etc. My hair dresser starts at $1,200. The first appointment is always the most expensive because you have to pay for the actual hair.
– How long does the hair last?
Around 9 months, depending on how well you take care of it.
– How often do you have to get them moved up?
Every 8-10 weeks, but this also depends on how fast your hair grows.
– Can you shower/sleep in them?
Yes, they just advise you not to sleep with your hair wet.
– Does it hurt?
It doesn’t hurt at all to put them in, but it is a little uncomfortable the first night or two just because they are so tight on your head. You get used to it so quick though and then you honestly can’t even tell they’re in.
(without extensions in)
(During the process with the first strand in – I only do 2 strands personally!)
– What shampoo and conditioner do you use?
Kevin Murphy plumping wash and conditioner. You can buy the set here (it smells AMAZING!).
– Purple shampoo?
Shimmer Lights or Kevin Murphy Blonde Angel (wash and rinse) – tip: be careful not to leave it in too long or your hair will turn purple… I’ve learned from experience.
– How often do you wash your hair?
If I have a fresh highlight, I will only wash it once every 5 days (don’t worry – I shower at LEAST once a day, I just don’t get my hair wet). But if my roots have grown in and I’m due for an appointment, I have to wash it every 2-3 days.
– What’s your favorite dry shampoo?
I have been using this one for awhile and I really like it because it smells good. My stylist swears by this one (for blondes) so I just ordered it. They also have it here for brunettes and she said it works amazing without leaving any white residue. If you’re looking for a cheaper option, this one works great, but does not smell as good as the others.
– Deep conditioning masks?
I SWEAR by this stuff, y’all. Jensen mixes this in my color when I’m getting my hair done, but I also use it as a conditioning treatment every couple of weeks when my hair is feeling dry. If you are going to buy one thing, buy this. I also really like these deep conditioning treatments.
– Texturizing Spray?
This is another one of my favorite products, ever! I don’t use hairspray because it weighs down my hair, so I use this to add some volume at the top.
– Volumizing Powder?
If you’ve never tried this then get ready for your life to be changed forever (especially if you have fine/thin hair). It’s similar to a texturizing spray, and adds so much volume. I know it’s expensive, but it will last you awhile because a little goes a long way.
– Leave-in Conditioner?
I like this one and this one! You HAVE to use a leave in conditioner!
– What hair brush do you use?
This is the brush I’ve used for the past 5 years and I will never go back to another. It helps SO much with detangling and getting knots out without ripping out your hair. I also use this round brush when I’m blow drying my hair.
– What hair dryer do you use?
This is a game changer in terms of the time it takes to blow dry your hair and has special technology for quick, healthy drying.
– Curling iron?
I have this one and this one and switch off using them – they’re both amazing!
– What hair products do you use to keep it so healthy?
Top things I would recommend are this deep conditioning treatment, this blow dryer and this pillow case!
– What is the perfect shampoo/conditioner to prolong colored hair?
The shampoo/conditioner I mentioned above is for color treated hair!
– Best products for hair growth?
I take these vitamins daily and truly think that helps. I know it’s expensive, but you’re getting a three month supply!
– What is the best purple shampoo for maintaining balayage? I’m naturally a brunette so I’m looking for something to brighten my ends and the front pieces rather than a total blonde-only shampoo.
To be honest, I don’t know if I’m the best person to ask for this because I’m not brunette. But I did a little research and crazy enough, several websites recommended the same Shimmer Lights shampoo/conditioner that I talked about above. So looks like it’s great for everyone!
– Which pony tails do you use to keep your hair up?
These are the best ponytails ever. They hold my hair up great even with the weight of extensions. This would be a great stocking stuffer as well!
– How do you curl your hair?
I explain the entire process in this blog post.
– Why does my hair grow to a certain length and then stop?
I’m not sure, but I would just suggest cutting off all the dead ends and trying not to apply heat as much after.
– Best way to grow your hair?
I wish I knew, lol. If I did, I wouldn’t have to pay for extensions. My advice would be to not color it for awhile, don’t apply any heat (blow dryer, straighter, curler), take your vitamins (I’ve been taking these for the past couple of months and think they have helped a lot) and not wash it every day. I also like to sleep with a braid and ALWAYS sleep on this silk pillowcase. It also helps a TON with bed head and helps reduce friction which often causes split ends (and has a ton of benefits for your skin as well).
– How to avoid hot tools?
Throw your hair up in a bun or a fun braid! If you curl or straighten it, wear that out for a couple of days. Don’t over curl it every day! I also ALWAYS use this heat protectant spray.
– How can I fix my damage from bleach?
Ugh, isn’t that the worst? I know this isn’t the answer anyone is looking for, but you need to let your hair rest and not add any heat/color to it. I wish I had a miracle product, but I don’t. Make this your new best friend.
I hope this helps and answers all of the questions you guys have had. If you have anymore, please leave me a comment below and I’ll get to it as soon as I can!
