Well, this post is long overdue, but with bowl games announced last night I thought it would be a great time to share. I’ve had so many questions the past couple of months asking for ideas on what to wear to a football game. Honestly, I haven’t really been sure how to answer this, because usually I decide the day of the game and just throw something together. I think it completely depends on a couple of factors:
1. Weather – For instance, this season we went to football games three weeks in a row at one point. The first was the Texas Tech vs. University of Houston game in Houston. I swear it was the hottest I’ve ever been in my entire life (okay, tied with Katherine’s wedding). I wore a white tank with jeans and booties and I made Clayton leave after 20 minutes because it was starting to become a wet t-shirt contest if you know what I mean…. #oops. The next weekend we were in Tulsa where my father-in-love played football and I wore this. The weather was AMAZING so I just threw on a white skirt and some Tulsa Hurricane blue and called it good. The third weekend we were in Oregon (where my hubby went to school – GO DUCKS!) for his alumnae baseball weekend and had so much fun at the game, but it was FREEZING. How could we possibly go from burning heat to perfect weather to freezing cold? You have to plan around what the weather is like because you want to be comfortable while you tailgate and watch the game.
2. Team Color – If I know I’m heading to a sporting event, the first place I start is with the team color. If you’re going to a Texas Tech game, you wear red or black. If you’re going to a University of Texas game, you wear burnt orange. (You get the point). So I start with something I have (or buy something) with that team color. In this post, I choose a red sweater. Then you pair your other accessories and clothing around that. If you haven’t heard me rave about these leggings yet, YOU NEED THEM. They are the most flattering things in the world and they’re on sale right now!
3. Geographic – I decided to wear this to the University of Oregon game and it was hilarious because all the girls asked me why I was so dressed up… I’m like, this is NOTHING compared to what we usually wear down in the south. I mean, in some parts of the country they wear dresses and heels and the guys wear full blown suits!! I went to Texas Tech and it wasn’t that dressy, but we definitely would throw on a skirt or dress and try to look cute. But at the same time, you could wear a jersey and shorts or jeans and fit in perfectly. I’ve learned over the years going to Oregon that majority of girls just wear team shirts or jerseys with leggings and tennis shoes – and guess what, there’s NOTHING wrong with that! They looked bomb in my opinion, which brings me to my fourth point…
4. What YOU like – I think everyone is a lot harder on themselves these days because of social media. When you go to an event, you aren’t just dressing for the people there, but for everyone who will see your picture on Instagram. But I encourage you to be yourself and refrain from trying to impress people. Wear what you feel comfortable in and makes YOU feel confident. Who cares if you’re wearing a jersey and the girl next to you is in a dress? YOU LOOK GOOD. Be confident and go have fun! Football is the best time of the year between tailgating, cheering on your favorite team or just hanging out with friends and family.
I also want to take a second to show off this purse. If you go to an NFL game (or now even a lot of college games) you will see they now have bag rules in place for security measures. Your purse has to be under a certain size (which is so small that you will struggle fitting your phone, lipstick and money in it) or clear. There are a lot of clear totes and purses being sold, but most are so ugly (no offense). So when I stumbled across this one, I was over the moon. The gold chain and trim make it chic and super classy. It’s the perfect size to fit everything you need for the day.
I hope this helps anyone who’s in need for some game day inspiration. Remember to wear what makes YOU feel confident and always add your personality into it. Good luck to all the teams in this years’ bowl games! Who are you rooting for? Let me know in the comments below!
